So, I duplicated a document wihtin Tapforms and then renamed my duplicated document, which I assumed was a separate document all on its own. Opened it and deleted records I didn’t want in this new document. But then, when I opened the original document the records that I deleted in the duplicated document were also deleted from my original document!
Is this how Tapforms is supposed to work? That seems extremely dangerous. I now have to restore the original document from a backup file to get all of my record back!

Now I have tried to restore by going to File > Restore and selecting my backup zip and it isn’t loading anything.

No, if you use the Duplicate Document command in Tap Forms, you get a unique document with a different Document ID assigned to it from the original. If you used the Finder to duplicate a document then it would be an exact copy of the document, including the Document ID and you would achieve the effect you experienced.

Did you in fact use the Duplicate Document command in the File menu? Or did you duplicate the document using the Finder?

I was using my M4 iPad Pro (latest iOS) and I selected the document within Tapforms and duplicated it and renamed it to a new name. I then opened that document and deleted the records I did not want in it. Then, when I opened the original document, the records I deleted in the duplicated one were also deleted in the original one.

I was able to get them all back using a backup, but I have to say, that process was not easy either. I did that on my Mac (Mac OS Sequoia 15.2 on an M4 MacBook) instead of my iPad. But, when I tried to load the backup file, the loading bar zipped by and went away and none of my old records showed up. That happened several times. Then I tried a Tapforms Archive instead of the backup files. After about a half hour of trying, they finally showed up, but then they would not sync to my iCloud and it kept pulling down the file with the deleted records instead of uploading the file with the records I reloaded (as if the iCloud version was more recent and it would only load info from that).

Somehow, it finally worked after about an hour and a half of doing things, but I had to relink some of my records that were linked because the linking was destroyed when loading the backup records.

I hope I never have to do that again, because it was extremely stressful thinking that all my info was gone and that I couldn’t get it back from my backup files. My Tapforms are all on the latest version, as well.

That’s very strange. I just tested again with Tap Forms 5 and the Duplicate Document did give me a unique Document ID number which would not sync with another device until I setup sync on that copy of the document.

The Restore function would re-apply the changes made to iCloud. I suspect that maybe you opened up the original document after you made the duplicate.

The instructions in the online manual about Backup & Restore describe how to deal with restoring a document that has been synced:

    https://www.tapforms.com/help-mac/5.3/en/topic/backup-restore

In a new version of Tap Forms I’m working on, this process will be greatly improved.

    Sorry for the trouble.

Tapforms did create a unique ID when I duplicated the doc. I looked at it on the iPad after I changed the name of the duplicate. But somehow it must have still been linked to the original version? I did open the orignal document after I made the duplicate. That’s how I noticed the records were gone.
    Thanks for your help.

Did you notice whether the duplicated document happened to have iCloud Sync enabled at the time? Were the records there and then suddenly they weren’t after a few moments?
